Description
The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the field of chemistry.
The department has 270 employees and a turnover of 300 million SEK. Within the department's six programs, highly successful research of high international quality is conducted. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international collaboration, and we see continued good growth within our subject area. The department has educational assignments within engineering and master's programs. More information can be found on our website (https://kemi.uu.se/angstrom).
Responsibilities
Carbon monoxide dehydrogenases (CODH) are highly active biocatalysts regarding the reversible reduction/oxidation of CO2. Consequently, they are being studied intensively due to their biotechnological potential. The project follows one of our main project lines, focusing on evolutionary reconstruction and directed evolution of CODH with the goal of developing biocatalysts that can be applied in CO2 fixation.
The applicant will work within an interdisciplinary project involving molecular biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, and biophysics. The researcher’s role in the project will primarily involve directed evolution of CODH including screening of mutant libraries under anaerobic conditions. The goal is to identify mutations that increase the activity for CO2 reduction. Successful mutants will be characterized in detail through a combination of electrochemistry, spectroscopy, and structural biology with a focus on determining the mechanism behind their enhanced properties. The work will be led by the researcher in collaboration with spectroscopists and structural biologists at Uppsala University and other universities, both within and outside Sweden.
The main task of the researcher is to focus on their research, but tasks such as supervising theses and doctoral students may also occur.
Qualifications
- PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, or similar or an equivalent foreign degree
- Experience in directed evolution
- Experience in biocatalysis, bioinformatics, biochemistry, biophysics, and/or bio-organic chemistry
- Good command of English, both spoken and written
We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will be given to, for example, good collaboration skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant is assessed to complement and strengthen the administrative work within the department/institution through their experience and competence.
